The Big Goal
I’ve always used my reselling profits to pay for something specific. It provides motivation, a sense of accomplishment, and it gives me a goal to work towards.
With that said, we finally decided it’s time to go for the big goal. Time to payoff our loan so we can move on to bigger and better goals. The official start date of this goal is August 2019. The total amount of debt at the start of the goal is $102,847.39.
How We Can Do This?
We are blessed to be able to live off one income. I know not everyone is, especially depending on what area of the country you live.
Due to living on one income, we are definitely not “keeping up with the Kardashians.” We do live extremely frugally and have a minimalist budget. (Think Frugalwoods – okay, maybe not quite).
We don’t drive the newest cars (actually getting pretty old). We don’t take tons of instagram-worthy vacations. Eating out is a rare occasion. Thanks to my thrifting, it’s rare that we buy anything new (underwear and socks mostly!).
I realize this isn’t the life for everyone, and in a lot of cases just not possible. But I figure if we are able to live frugally for a few years, it will be freedom in the long run. Likewise, I am seeing it as a few short years of sacrifice for long-term gains. Or as Dave Ramsey says,
“Live like no one else, so later you can live like no one else.”
Time Frame
If we are able to live off one income, and use all (or almost all) of my reselling profits towards extra mortgage payments, I am looking at payoff in 4-5 years. Hopefully by the time the youngest starts kindergarten.
What’s Next?
So what’s next after paying off the house?
There is a huge shortage in our community of affordable, safe housing for low-income families. A shortage so great, rents have been increasing in our area as much as 10% a year! Consequently, according to HUD Secretary Ben Carson, one of the main reasons for this affordability crises is an imbalance in supply and demand.
I would like to be able to provide housing for low-income families that helps meet the demand.
I’ve seen what it means to families to have stable housing. To not have to move every couple years. Whether it’s a single-family residence or a small multi-family, I believe providing either can have a huge impact on our local community.
